HIDDEN HISTORY OF DENVER by ELIZABETH VICTORIA WALLACE

Have just tweeted my first little promo for my sister Elizabeth Victoria Wallace who has seen her seventh fabulous book published this weekend under the History Press' HIDDEN HISTORY OF DENVER.  It's brilliant and readers are certainly in for a surprise.

Elizabeth explores this amazing city.  Time has washed away so many unusual stories—from the dark days of nineteenth-century Law and Order League lynching, and the KKK’s later rise and fall to the heroism of suffragettes and the touching plight of the gypsies.

Elizabeth has discovered so many intriguing stories.  She introduces readers to characters like world heavyweight boxing champion Charles L. “Sonny” Liston, hit-man turned rodeo promoter Leland Varain, aka “Diamond Jack,” and the city’s daring wall dogs, whose hand-painted building advertisements are fading reminders of a bygone Denver.

Elizabeth's book can be found in Barnes and Noble and on Amazon, plus all good book stores and sources.  ISBN is  9781609493509 or you can contact the History Press directly.$19.99.

CELEBRATE WITH ELIZABETH'S BOOK LAUNCH

Elizabeth Wallace's new book FORBIDDEN is taking centre stage today in Aurora, Denver, USA. Today is the reception for the book - wish we could all be there to celebrate. This great book has been receiving excellent and well-deserved reviews in Britain and the US.

"Forbidden" tells the story of Catherine MacDonald, a woman of seventeenth century Scotland looking for the truth behind the disappearance of her mother all those years ago. When she finds the truth, it may just be stranger than fiction. A remarkable and exciting work of historical fiction. "Forbidden" is a must-read novel.

An added bonus today is the chance to meet the talented illustrator of the book, Audrey Ledgerwood, along with Sosanna Kuruvila who is hosting Elizabeth's Book Reception.

FORBIDDEN - Elizabeth's new book

Elizabeth Wallace has arrived in England. This Denver-based author, broadcaster and lecturer has several web pages and blogs. She writes on many topics but particularly enjoys travel, history, word and phrase origins, curious customs, superstitions, and folklore.

Elizabeth has published five books on travel and history. All have been very successful and have gone into further publications. Her newly released sixth book entitled "Forbidden" is her first novel and she is current marketing and signing her new book. She is very active in her Colorado community giving presentations, workshops and book signing events. As founder member of the Castle Rock Writers, she continues to give support and encouragement to the group, as well as attending critique groups and workshops. She has appeared several times on television to promote and market her books. Her great friend, the illustrator Audrey Ledgerwood has created a fascinating front cover for Elizabeth.

Elizabeth's story is set in Essex, England and Scotland during the mid 1660s. It is fast paced, dark and edgy, and is based partly on an ancient Scottish legend on which the BBC recently made a documentary. They tried to find the subterranean cave that is a key part of the story. Black Rose Writing (www.blackrosewritingbooks.com) www.extraordinaryplaces.com http://extraordinaryplaces.blogspot.com/

CHRISTMAS PAST IN ESSEX

Very happy to see our Denver SWWJ member, Elizabeth Wallace’s book CHRISTMAS PAST IN ESSEX is still selling very well – now in its third year - in all the Waterstone’s Bookshops that I’ve visited over the last few weeks. In fact, many of our Society members’ books are on display nationally as well as in their regional local bookshops.

THE SOUTH EAST WELCOMES TOURISTS

Many of our SWWJ members who write books on travel and tourism are enjoying increased sales. Our member in Denver, Colorado, Elizabeth Wallace produced EXTRAORDINARY PLACES - CLOSE TO LONDON a few years ago and it is certainly a favourite with American tourists, continuing to sell very well in the States. Elizabeth enjoyed coming over to England to research the magic of the South East and will be visiting soon for signing sessions in Waterstones and Borders.

ELIZABETH - EX PAT AND WRITER EXTRAORDINAIRE

My little sister Elizabeth is a well published author and journalist. Living in Denver, Colorado, her work is in great demand all over the world (lucky girl) and she always finds interesting nuggets of history for her website which enjoys a host of returning regular viewers. I like this particular piece about our English pub signs. Every 'hostelry' she has mentioned can be seen around our English (and particularly, our Essex countryside. Here is a tiny glimpse of her super website. www.extraordinaryplaces.net
*********************************************************************************
Pub signs have been used in England since the 14th century when in 1393 King Richard II ordered landlords to put signs outside their premises so they were easy to identify. Some pubs have maintained the same name for centuries. The signs were highly graphical to make it easy for travelers who would neither read nor write to recognize the name of the establishment. Pubs (or inns if they offered rooms to rent) were often used as landmarks together with churches, milestones and cairns to help a traveler find their destination. Often the signs indicated an allegiance to the crown with names such as “The King’s Head” or “Queen’s Head”, but others signified the area specialty such as “The Lamb and Fleece” (farming) or “The Cutlers Arms” (an area known for their cutlery expertise). ELIZABETH'S SUCCESS

Christmas Book Signing by Elizabeth Wallace, overseas member of the Society of Women Writers & Journalists.

Her book Christmas Past in Essex is selling well this year, both in the US and England. Here she is at a couple of Borders Bookshops in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was delighted to see so many people stop by to purchase books and have them personalized and autographed. Her eponymous book about Cororado Springs is also receiving great attention, along with earlier books which can still be obtained via Elizabeth on her website (www.extraordinaryplaces.com) or from Amazon. Work never stops for Elizabeth who has just finished yet another book, hopefully to go on the bookshelves next year. As well as being a fine writer, she is also a broadcaster and lecturer.

ELIZABETH ARRIVES IN ENGLAND

CHRISTMAS PAST IN ESSEX

Next week, Elizabeth Wallace arrives from Denver, Colorado to launch her new book in England. In her book, Elizabeth describes the life and times of the people in the county at Christmas. She outlines the life of the rich and the poor and how they celebrated. Many of the folk migrated to Essex from the London area and, of course, they brought with them their distinctive customs and traditions that are still used at Christmas-time.

Christmas Past in Essex offers the reader an extraordinary historical glimpse into lives of the people of Essex. From the little girl who fondly recalls her Christmases in an orphanage to Jack Bartlett, the Billericay postman who diligently delivered the post and then returned home to fall asleep over his Christmas dinner. There are scores of wonderful stories and excellent photographs, many of which have never before been published.

As Elizabeth collected the wonderful memories and treasured photographs, she was mindful of the responsibility placed in her hands. To this end, she recorded the memoirs verbatim, and was therefore able to keep the individual’s voice and essence. There are more than 60 fascinating photographs, original artwork from Essex artists and over one hundred intriguing stories, customs and traditions contained in Christmas Past in Essex.

Elizabeth hopes that readers will enjoy the stories and photographs contained in Christmas Past in Essex and in doing so will rekindle pleasant memories of their own Christmases that will be handed down to future generations.
