JOYCE GRENFELL OBE IS STILL ONE OF THE BEST
Our Society of Women Writers and Journalists has, for 128 years, enjoyed great popularity with writers and all creative folk - both, obviously with women, but also with male professionals internationally.
I've enjoyed meeting fellow members over many years and contributing to the success of our organisation, in my various positions over the last 28 years. I am now the keeper of the SWWJ archives and am happy to answer questions about our history and the lives of some of our famous literary members who have brought their time, talents and personalities to our meetings since 1894.
Although many of our famous members are no longer with us, we can see them in some of the old films and hear them on BBC radio; also traceable on line. Perhaps the best film programmes can be seen on 'Talking Pictures'. The list is long. Joyce appeared in dozens of films, recorded monologues, appeared in '40s and '50s cabaret and, of course, television, in which she excelled. There are also her books and poetry that give us glimpses of a superb personality and actor.
Over the last weekend, we were able to see this fabulous actor in one of her well-remembered films 'The Belles of St Trinians'.
Do check out what our Society can offer to older and new members at our website www.swwj.co.uk and perhaps read more about Joyce and many of our luminaries in my book The Woman Writer available from The History Press, book stores and Amazon.
Our current fabulous president is Floella, Baroness Benjamin of Beckenham. www.swwj.co.uk
