OUR FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE JENNIFER WORTH

It was with pride mixed with sadness that members of the Society of Women Writers and Journalists viewed the BBC 1 Television programme on Sunday, CALL THE MIDWIFE. Written by our member, the late Jennifer Worth, whose life is played out in the film by the lovely young actress, Jessica Raine, the film was so poignant for her family and close friends. Do watch the next episode on Sunday at 8pm. The older Jennifer's voice brings Vanessa Redgrave into the production.

Trained as a very young nurse, Jennifer became a midwife, ward sister and night-sister from 1953 until 1973. Jennifer knew the East End of London, particularly Poplar, so well and the film producer and director have faithfully kept to the themes of her book.

Having written so movingly about the beginning of life, Jennifer’s last book In the Midst of Life explored the complexities surrounding how we die. Written with passion and conviction, this book is about the mystery, the beauty, the loneliness and the aspirations of death.

Here are a few of my photographs taken at our SWWJ Summer Festival in London's Royal Over-seas League. It was a privilege and pleasure to have Jennifer' company. She enjoyed meeting our Life President, Shirley Williams (Baroness Williams of Crosby) and our then chairman, Jean Morris and we loved chatting with her.

THE ESSEX BOOK FESTIVAL IS COMING!

One of England's most popular book festivals is approaching. Once again, with support from Arts Council, England and local partners, this fabulous month-event will bring bestselling authors and a variety of exciting talent to our county.

Throughout Essex at various libraries, University of Essex, academies and church halls, we will meet writers such as Alexander McCall Smith, Andrew Motion, Jodi Picoult, Prue Leith, Simon Brett, Kathy Lette and a host of other luminaries from the world of books, theatre, art and craft.

We kick off on l March at Chelmsford Library and the launch will involve BBC Essex's superduper presenter, Dave Monk who will be broadcasting live to the 1.5 million residents in our county. DENVER - THE MILE-HIGH CITY (5,280 feet above sea level)

Notmuch time for reading over Christmas but have now tucked into the HIDDENHISTORY OF DENVER written by Elizabeth Victoria Wallace and published by TheHistory Press.

AsJames LaRue, Director of Douglas County Libraries commented: “The history of the West is the history ofthe footloose. Some were fleeing thelaw. Some became the law. Others sought fortunes and either gained orlost them – or both. The history ofDenver covering 1858 to the 1940s, is a rich stew of colorful characters.”

Wallaceknows her city well. Denver wasoriginally known as El Dorado and was the place that the gold-seeking pioneers wereaiming for. With so many wagon trains crossing the prairie, often one met thepreceding one, forming continuous trains that stretched for almost fifteenmiles.

In1880, the population of Denver had reached more than 35,000 residents. In the 1890s, Denver became well known forits curative properties and attracted thousands desirous of finding a cure fortuberculosis and many people escaped the fog-ridden streets of London, England,to make their way to Colorado Springs, then later to Denver. So many Englisharrived, that the town was dubbed “Little London”.

Althoughmany people suffered from prejudices in Colorado, the native American Ute Indianssuffered a unique loss. They lost theirland they had loved and respected for centuries; they lost their livelihood andfood source. The Chinese population ofDenver also suffered intolerance and bigotry and Wallace has carefullyresearched many disparate tales from this rather special place. We learn of characters like world heavyweight boxingchampion Charles L “Sonny” Liston, hit-man turned rodeo promoter LelandVarain, aka “Diamond Jack,” and the city’s daring wall dogs, whose hand-paintedbuilding advertisements are fading reminders of a bygone Denver.

STORY BEHIND OUR CHRISTMAS STAMPS THIS YEAR

So the King James Version of the Bible celebrates its 400 years. Few of those involved in its production in 1611 could have guessed that their new publication would go on to achieve classic status, becoming an international best-seller. It certainly took its time (late 17th century) for its remarkable qualities to be recognised. Perhaps the most important contribution has been to the shaping of the English language. Phrases such as 'the powers that be', 'land of the living' and 'apple of my eye', among many others, have all become part of our everyday speech.

The 400th anniversary of the publication of the Authorised Version has been marked by the issuing of seven stamps for this Christmas which draw on special events in the Gospel accounts of the Nativity from the King James Bible.

The Stage’s long history by Susan Elkin

The late 19th century was quite an era for new initiatives which turned out to be long lasting. In 1880, Maurice Comerford (with Editor Charles Lionel Carson) launched a monthly publication which was reborn a year later as a weekly newspaper: The Stage which we all know and love.

Thirteen years later, in 1894, Comerford’s friend, the journalist, entrepreneur and fund raiser Joseph Snell Wood, recognised that women journalists — a growing and powerful force in the last quarter of Victoria’s reign — needed a specific support organisation to establish and safeguard their rights.

So he founded the Society of Women Journalists. In 1951 it changed its name to the Society of Women Writers and Journalists to meet the changing needs of its members. And of course they wrote for The Stage right from the beginning and still do. I have long been a member of SWWJ — and here I am.

Sylvia Kent, SWWJ council member and archivist, has now documented the society’s history. And it’s an entertaining and informative book which, in a succinct and accessible way, actually goes way beyond the history of the SWWJ to provide a nice snapshot of women writers and their work during the last century or so. There’s plenty of information here for anyone doing a research-based degree on this or a related subject, for example.

Her opening chapter about the indefatigable Snell Wood and life in the 1880s is colourful and interesting. Why, Kent wonders, did he think the original members needed the services of an oculist and a rhinologist?

We also learn about SWWJ’s competitions, the breadth of its membership, its education work, its key members today and much more. Kent has included some fine photographs too. The ‘mugshots’ of early members who wrote for The Gentlewoman, which Snell Wood edited, are splendid. Cut from that to vice-president Jean Bowden (aka romantic novelist Tessa Barclay) with Jacqueline Wilson (now Dame Jacqueline) in 1990, or Martina Cole ‘one of our newest members’ and you get the sense of what a far reaching little book this is - with quite a lot to interest Stage readers.

Enjoyed a relaxed and hugely entertaining winter drinks reception last night at the House of Commons (my old Hansard stamping ground). Presentation and awards of the 2011 Educational Writers' Award administered by The Society of Authors and sponsored by the lovely Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society. My SWWJ colleagues joined in the fun and the evening was organised so beautifully. Local Member of Parliament, John Whittingdale, representing Maldon, Essex was great and lots of writing friends popped up during a lovely, lively evening. Thanks to Barbara Hayes and her team. Not allowed to take my own pics inside, but here's one showing Big Ben and the Christmas Tree (snapped on the way out of Westminster Hall).

SUNDAY'S CHRISTMAS MARKET AT BILLERICAY

What a great day for the town yesterday when Billericay traders, voluntary groups and of course thousands of shoppers celebrated an early Christmas bonanza in our ancient High Street. Everyone was there and of course our super Cater Museum Curator, Chris Brewster and her team welcomed people through the door of our lovely museum, plus some merrymakers at the Council Offices. Just a few pictures here giving a feel of a super day.

NICK ARDLEY'S NEW BOOK

How does Nick Ardley manage it? This prodigious writer has just published his new book which has a rather long title: THE JOTTINGS OF A THAMES ESTUARY DITCH-CRAWLER (Amberley Publishing). This is a remarkable book about sailing, living on a Thames spritsail barge and the whole fascinating business of boat owning.

Nick is great at telling a salty tale and this time he takes us on another series of journeys in his yacht Whimbrel, through the meandering waterways and creeks that feed into the Thames and its estuary.

This author has been a familiar, friendly face at earlier Essex Book Festivals, particularly during the official openings at Chelmsford Library and his talks are always popular. He writes articles for Yachting Monthly and Anglia Afloat and his work has been published in Essex Life and Suffolk Magazines (two journals who also use my own work) - Lovely! ESSEX MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY MEET IN CHELMSFORD

A relaxing day, lovely lunch and good company were on the menu yesterday for the SWWJ Essex Regional meeting at Anita Sackett's home in Chelmsford. This was the perfect spot to meet up with other members and friends, as this is our famous county town, so central for all. Pictured are some of the diners. Missing is Elizabeth Lord, the well known novelist, but at the end of the blog, you can see a pic of her with Martina Cole, another Essex lass. This was taken a few years ago when Martina came to talk to us.

Following our gathering we all shot off to Chelmsford town to meet with our Britain's Children's current Laureate, Julia Donaldson, who was signing copies of her book The Gruffalo with scores of children queued up outside as we swept in to 'Just Imagine...' Book Centre, to take a few snaps. I love Nikki's window Picture here of Anita Sackett, Nikki Gamble and Julia Donaldson. Nikki is doing some wonderful work here in Chelmsford and the Centre is certainly the place to visit for children of all ages.

Steam trains are still a fascination for many of us and just recently, I've enjoyed a couple of 'memory lane' steam railway trips. So, it's a privilege to be asked to review Amberley Publishing Stour Valley Railway Through Time created by Andy T Wallis. ISBN 978-1-4456-0472-5 £14.99

Within his fifteen chapters, we are treated to several hundred fabulous photos of locomotives from Suffolk and Essex including those from the former Colchester, Stour Valley, Sudbury & Halstead Railway which was authorised by Act of Parliament in 1846, to build the Colchester to Hythe line and a second, Marks Tey to Sudbury, with a branch to Halstead.

Railway buffs will know much about our Great Eastern Railway passing into the new London & North Eastern Railway on l January 1923 and the advent of the special excursion trains running from the Midlands and Cambridge via both the Stour Valley and Colne Valley lines to Clacton and Walton.

From 1 January 1959, steam traction was replaced by diesel locomotive-hauled trains for both freight and excursion traffic. The last passenger service to travel over the whole line took place in June 1961 when the Ramblers' Special worked from Liverpool Street to Bury St Edmunds. We learn much about the Beeching Report in 1963 and the rows and opposition to the closure plans.

"Andy Wallis has done a fine job," commented a retired railway engineer. "The book contains some fascinating photographs tracing some of the numerous ways in which the Stour Valley Railways has changed and developed over the last century." MY STAR OF THE WEEK - ROCKY THE RETIRED GREYHOUND

Friends and family know that I love cats - our current pet is Pixie, but should I choose a dog, he would resemble Rocky, the wonderful greyhound, who accompanies Chris Brewster, our Curator of the Cater Museum in Billericay.

Now Rocky is our current star and also a 'cover boy' whose story has been written by Chris to raise money for Clarks Farm Greyhound Rescue. Rocky is a care dog registered with CANINE CONCERN. He was adopted from Clark's Farm. http://www.clarksfarm.org.uk/. This charity is rather special as it provides therapeutic visits to hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, special needs schools and a variety of other places by volunteers with their own friendly dogs and cats. What a wonderful idea for those who are forced to be apart from their own pets.

Rocky, our special retired greyhound, who has such a gentle nature, has passed his test to be part of this important work and seems to enjoy bringing comfort to many. You meet some of the world's nicest and most interesting people at the Chelsea Flower Show, London. It was here that I met Motoki Hirai, a wonderful concert pianist. He has appeared in the music capitals of the world, performing regularly in London’s prestigious venues including the Wigmore Hall, St. John’s, Smith Square and the South Bank Centre. Way back in the spring, Motoki gave a hugely successful sold-out recital in Carnegie Hall in New York. During recent seasons, he has performed in Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Romania, Spain, USA and his native Japan. Highlights of the 2010/2011 season and beyond include concerto performances with orchestras such as Czech Virtuosi, solo recitals in venues including Cadogan Hall (London) and Carnegie Hall (NY), as well as concert tours across Europe and Japan.

Whilst being a leading interpreter of the standard repertoire for piano solo, Motoki is equally at home with chamber music and lieder, shading an inspiring and personal light on music from all periods. Since 1991, Motoki has collaborated with artists including Michael Cox, Kalman Berkes, Barry Craft, John Pearce and his father, the celebrated cellist Takeichiro Hirai, whom Pablo Casals designated as his successor.

As a composer, Motoki has been commissioned to write new works for international artists in various fields which were performed and premièred in venues such as Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre, Chelsea Flower Show, Chelsea Festival 2008, Dulwich Festival 2010 (London), St. George’s (Bristol), Smetana Hall (Prague), Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris (Paris), Auditori Pau Casals (Barcelona), Carnegie Hall (NY), Tokyo Opera City and NHK Hall (Tokyo). His music has also been used in films such as ‘Voice’ (2004) and ‘The Emperor’s Tram Girls’ (2005).

Born in Tokyo into a highly gifted musical family, Motoki studied piano and composition with his grandfather, the eminent composer Kozaburo Y. Hirai, and violin with his grandmother. Since his first professional appearance at the age of 13 playing his own piano works to great critical acclaim, he has been highly active in both performance and composition. After reading philosophy and aesthetics at Keio University in Tokyo, Motoki came to London in 1996 to study at the Royal Academy of Music, and later at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and City University. His teachers have included Frank Wibaut, Dominique Merlet, James Gibb, Patsy Toh and Joseph Seiger.

Over the years, Motoki Hirai has performed for the promotion of world peace and for people in need worldwide in association with organizations such as the Red Cross, Motor Neurone Disease Association, UNICEF and UNESCO. In 2010 Motoki was invited to Lithuania to give a charity concert, commemorating Sempo (Chiune) Sugihara who saved the lives of 6000 Polish Jews during World War II.

He has also been involved in fascinating educational programmes to promote Japanese art and culture across the world, such as the “Picture Books – Storytelling, Images and Music” project (2007- ) as artistic director as well as composer.

W E A COURSE IN BILLERICAY

It's years since I've been involved in the WEA movement (last classes were based at Brentwood). Then we had Victorian novelists and American writers on the reading list, but am delighted I chose this current course TALKING HEADS tutored by Stephen O'Kane asssisted by Denise Fielding. The course started last week and continues over eight weeks.

Alan Bennett has always intrigued me, certainly since the days from Beyond the Fringe at London's Mayfair Hotel, so we all go back a very long time. Bennett's monologues are so cleverly created and acted and we are treated to performances from Julie Walters, Maggie Smith, Patricia Routledge, Stephanie Cole, Eileen Atkins among others including the great man himself. Next week we study BED AMONG THE LENTILS with the fabulous Maggie Smith (born in Essex, incidentally!) and I've already done my homework - what a swot! Although my interest in collecting stamps has dimmed somewhat over the years (I once owned a great collection), I'm still interested in the historical aspect of philately. I was delighted to receive a set of commemorative stamps linked to 1661 and can tell you that the recent release of these special King Charles 11 stamps has created huge interest among stamp buffs. We are now celebrating the 350th anniversary of the creation of the Crown Jewels.

The Crown Jewels formed part of a new set of Regalia made for King Charles II’s coronation in 1661 and this stamp issue features some of the most important and iconic pieces from this fabulous collection, which takes pride of place in the Tower of London and is guarded by our famous Yeomen Warders. The powers that be have inserted some images from the Tower Of London with the Warders themselves. These are certainly some of the most sparkling stamps they have issued.

"THE DNA OF SUCCESS"

What is success? It's a difficult topic to define. I learned a little more about it at the House of Lords last week when Chris Norton, managing director and owner of the Mentor Group, based in Hertfordshire, launched his new book - THE DNA OF SUCCESS. Chris is also chairman of Watford FC Community Sports and Education Trust. Part of the proceeds from his book will be donated to the Trust.

The day was a dazzling affair with some of the leading figures from politics, business, military, sport and the arts - in fact many of the book's contributors came along to toast Chris Norton's success. Lord MacLaurin of Knebworth wrote the foreword to Chris' book and sponsored our lovely day in the Cholmondeley Room and Terrace in the Lords.

Despite winds and a sprinkling of rain over the weekend, nothing marred the fun and super atmosphere of Barleylands Country Show - their 25th great event. My visit was on Sunday and I picked the better day to meet up with so many craftspeople I've known and written about over the years. Traditional steam engines were demonstrated - always fascinating and the veteran cars were out in full force. I learned more about coppicing, thatching, bodging and could have stayed for hours. Lovely to meet up with the Philpot family and many other friends. Here are a few photos taken on the day.

Not since I read Jock of the Bushveld, the true story set in the 1880s by South African author James Percy Fitzpatrick, have I re-visited this part of the world, so was delighted recently to be given a copy of Candi Miller's Kalahari Passage.

In her new novel, Miller tells us of a people hunted and harried to near-extinction. Her heroine is Koba, a San bushman who has lived most of her life as the adopted daughter of a white farming family. When news of her love affair with their son, Mannie, is discovered, Koba is arrested and sent for repatriation to the lands of the Kalahari Desert.

Her life thereafter in the hands of a vindictive Boer who murdered her parents and is intent on killing her too, means that the girl must escape and flee across the barren South West African sandveld. Koba survives by remembering her San hunter wiles to find her nomadic tribe. But will she stay alive long enough to succeed after years of living among whites?

Miller’s powerful and evocative tale of displacement, love and longing has many wonderful moments, and as always, I've added much to my knowledge of African life. I do recommend this searching book.

Rarely do I watch breakfast TV but this morning I knew that my friend, colleague, blogger and author, Piper Terrett would be appearing on the BBC, so up with the lark to watch. Of course she put on a great performance talking about her money-saving tips and advice on keeping our homes warm for the least possible outlay and how best to manage our pennies.

Unfortunately, they didn't mention Piper's super non-fiction book called THE FRUGAL LIFE which incorporates a couple of years of research into saving money in all areas of our lives. The Billericay Archive Heritage group continues into its second year, courtesy of the Essex Record Office and Heritage Lottery Fund. Hundreds from around the world have shown interest in our history. Also, there are some wonderful films of fifty years ago provided by Ian Rough who currently lives in France.

Sadly, today was the funeral of Jack Bartlett, aged 96 (pictured above on his 90th birthday) and the group of post office workers taken in the 1950s. Jack was one of our very special people whom you will see on the Billericay history site with his wife on their wedding day in 1941. Jack was a lovely friend who enjoyed appearing in my articles and books over the last ten years. We will miss him.

Last Friday turned out to be a rather special day when I turned up at the Just Imagine Story Centre in Chelmsford and, at last, met their Director, the lovely Nikki Gamble. Having so much to do with writing and reading groups, mainly in the adult arena, it was a great pleasure (and surprise) to learn more about what is going on in children's publications.

Nikki's Centre, which is so accessible right in the centre of our county town at 64-68 New London Road, was buzzing, not only with children choosing books, but with the prospect of upcoming events across August and September aimed at children (and adults). Yesterday was rather special for local photographer and speaker, Bart Kent (no relation). His family from Yorkshire arrived in town to celebrate his birthday and were treated to a viewing of his fabulous photographs displayed at Brentwood Library. Then they were all whisked off to the Phoenix Radio station when Bart made his first 'appearance' on radio, after meeting Ed Wellman standing in for Alan Johnson on the Feel Good Saturday programme. A brief history

Brentwood Theatre – the community theatre for Brentwood, Havering and beyond – opened in December 1993 following fifteen years of campaigning and fundraising by a dedicated core of theatre followers who collectively realised that Brentwood was the largest town in England without a dedicated theatre space. We aim to provide the people of Brentwood and the surrounding areas with a vibrant, artistically challenging community theatre offering a wide-ranging programme in the performing arts.

Since opening, our popularity has grown and grown. We now regularly see over 17,500 visitors every year, coming along to see a wide variety of productions. Most of the shows are performed by non-professional (‘amateur’) companies who rehearse in local halls, arrange costumes, build scenery etc etc and bring in their finished production to us for your entertainment. Over forty groups regularly use Brentwood Theatre for their shows, and many of them now consider us their ‘home’.

CLACTON BORN AUTHOR'S BEST SELLING TRILOGY

Members of the Society of Women Writers & Journalists mourned the recent death of Jennifer Worth, one of our best selling authors. Jennifer was born in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex and grew up in Amersham. She trained as a nurse and midwife during the 1950s "wanting a challenge" and certainly found this in her work in the East End of London. In this deprived area, she delivered fifty per cent of babies in overcrowded homes, often in terrible conditions. Life in Popar was so difficult for the people living in the area in war-torn London, but their humour was life-enhancing.

Jennifer's trilogy Call the Midwife (2002), Shadows of the Workhouse (2005) and Farewell to the East End (2009), describing a world before the contraceptive pill and legalised abortion, is absolutely fascinating and she has written from the heart. Her narrative was full of tales of resilience and - unusually - often funny despite the grimmest conditions.

Selling almost a million copies in Britain alone, Jennifer's books brought her to the attention of the film producers and Call the Midwife is now being made into a television series for the BBC. Will keep readers up to date on when it will appear.

Jennifer was trained as a nurse, midwife, ward sister and night sister from 1953 until 1973. She was a nurse at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading and then moved to London for her midwifery training. She later became a staff nurse at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, then ward sister at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital in Euston; later working at the Marie Curie Hospital in Hampstead.

Having written so movingly about the beginning of life, Jennifer’s latest book In the Midst of Life explored the complexities surrounding how we die. Written with passion and conviction, this book is about the mystery, the beauty, the loneliness and the aspirations of death.

Our friend Jennifer attended last year's Summer Festival in London and it was a pleasure to have her company. She enjoyed meeting our Life President, Shirley Williams (Baroness Williams of Crosby) and we certainly loved chatting with her.

From the pile of new books received over the last few months, it was a huge pleasure to start reading and reviewing this latest superb chronicle. Thankfully, history is now being chosen as an option by the young, after being sidelined by students for a decade or so and there could be no better exemplar than this latest issue from the publisher Dorling Kindersley.

There is barely a month goes by when yet another book comes on to the market - many of them self-published. The latest is ESSEX AT WAR written by Michael Foley and published under Amberley Publishing Plc. Stroud. Having read several of this author's earlier books, I enjoy his relaxed style, although the subject of the book is rather serious.

Essex has been at the centre of conflict since the earliest days of recorded history. Billericay's Cater Musum Curator, Chris Brewster, is never short of ideas when it comes to attracting visitors.   Her upcoming Textile Exhibition starting 9th to 25 July will certainly be of interest to people of all ages, particularly those with a love of history.

On Saturday 16 July from noon until 5pm, Chris is inviting children of all ages to "Have a Go" and see how simple it is to create the most wonderful braids and pieces of woven material from Inkle Looms and Lucets.   People dressed in period costume will be in the Museum that day and we will also be honoured by the presence of Mr Peter Brierley who most certainly knows a thing or two about weaving and associated crafts.

Also on display, as ever, is our beautiful garden with so many unusual plants and herbs, many dating back to the Elizabethan period.   Do come!

Following the National Council on Archives' gathering at UCL last week, the six towns in this part of Essex are adding more material to their individual archive websites. See the Billericay contingent at www.billericayhistory.org.uk. Below is a line-up of some of our local interviewers pictured at the Essex Record Office in April.

We have below, too, some film footage taken in Billericay in the summer of 1962 showing citizens going about their business, shopping, having fun in Lake Meadows, taking part in the Carnival and many clips of a life that was very much more leisurely.

A huge thank you to Ian Rough who supplied this film footage and so much more. Ian became a professional photographer and top advertising executive in later years. He now lives in France, but keeps an eye on us from time to time.

The novelist, Elizabeth Lord organised a great evening for us all and Juliet had an avid audience - hanging on her every word. MISTRESS ANGHARAD, COOK AT KENTWELL HALL

Enjoyed meeting the lovely Mistress Angharad (pictured) who gave an excellent talk the other night giving us all a taste of Kentwell Hall in Long Melford, Suffolk, a place I’ve visited in the past. As a ‘Tudor nut’, Kentwell Hall is the place to be in the summer. Every year, their Great Annual Re-Creation is set in a different year of the 120 years of the Tudor period. Kentwell's Tudors react to the outside events of that year as if they were actually taking place then and they really do speak ‘Tudorese’. Mistress Angharad is the cook at Kentwell and showed us how to make ‘Tussie Mussies’ using herbs and edible flowers.

There's so much for visitors to experience at Kentwell Hall. More than 200 participants (up to 400 at weekends) at any one time are there, creating the dress, speech, food, drink, music, dance, crafts, activities, pleasures and way of life of the chosen year. This year is 1553 and visitors feel they have been transported back to a whole 16th century community in which everyone is dependant upon each other. This is how life actually was not just a series of demonstrations.

At the Hall- meet members of the Clopton family (who built and lived at Kentwell during the 16th century), their friends as well as those retainers working at the Hall and in its service building those who serve them. All carry on as each might have done then. Here and in its original service building of 1500, the Moat House, you may meet members of the Cloptons and their friends from young children to aged relatives perhaps engaged in business or relaxing with music & dance; their Stewards, Butler, Housekeeper & Pages attending upon them. Michael Casey from Thurrock arrived to film members for his U tube set-up. Here he is with President, Frances Clamp. SWWJ AGM AND SUMMER FESTIVAL

Super day out in London yesterday. The New Cavendish Club (Marble Arch) was the venue for our SWWJ Summer Festival celebrations. Great to see so many friends from the past and also many new members and guests. Sandra Howard was wonderful and judged the Elizabeth Longford poetry competition which was won by Fay Marshall. The Theodora Roscoe Trophy for a short story was judged by Vanessa Gebbie and was won by Emma Louise Timpany (a Probationer from Falmouth, Cornwall), again a superb entry and both writers were present to receive their beautiful trophies.

Nicola Beauman, founder of Persephone Books was our guest speaker and was such a huge inspiration to all the writers present. (She is pictured with Patrick Forsyth, columnist with the Writing Magazine). Also pictured is Sandra Howard and Doreen Friend and Catherine Miller who will be handling the Society's Press & Publicity.

TRIBUTE TO DENNIS ROOKARD, MAN OF MANY PARTS

After a ten year gap, it was a great privilege to catch up with the Brentwood & District Photographic Club members when I arrived last week to give them a tribute talk dedicated to a super colleague, the late Dennis Rookard. Dennis was not only a journalist, short story writer, photographer, radio station enthusiastic, Talking Newspaper aficianardo, steam train fanatic and a man interested in everything fascinating about people and places (the name of one of my columns for the Weekly News Series). Dennis died a year ago and last Friday evening's session was devoted to this large, funny, friendly and kindly gentleman of the press. It was wonderful to meet so many of his friends, fellow members of this distinguished photographic club and some new members. Chelsea showed off many of its gardens, large and small, but this Suffolk-based Nursery was particularly interesting. John Woods Nurseries’ Fruitful Garden won a Silver-Gilt Flora on Monday.

Designed by DeakinLock, A Fruitful Garden formed part of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Four Generations feature, sponsored by The Sun. The feature shows visitors how to develop an existing front garden to grow fruit alongside existing planting with minimal fuss or outlay. Ease of maintenance and optimum use of limited space were key factors in the design.

The award follows a high profile start to the event for John Woods Nurseries, who also welcomed actresses Barbara Windsor and Hannah Gordon, broadcaster Piers Morgan and designers Zandra Rhodes and Linda Barker onto the stand.

Created for a theoretical end-of-terrace property on a new build development in an East Anglian town, A Fruitful Garden features reclaimed galvanised water tanks that act as features while collecting rain water for irrigation. The plot was bordered on two sides by a fence of reclaimed metal re-bar and timber posts which were semi industrial, reflecting the urban location. They also allow greater access to planting around the edges of the plot, making maintenance easier. A stone plinth provided seating in the garden while a high western boundary wall clad with pebbles and timber, reflecting the materials used throughout the property, and demonstrating how, even in a small space every surface can be used creatively.

Also orchids and cabbages, roses and rhubarb - exotic plants and allotment veggies - they all appeared in their wonderful profusion yesterday at the VIP Preview at Chelsea at dawn yesterday. This was my 12th year (although I did interview Percy Thrower at Chelsea in 1980) and its fun meeting up with journo pals in the Media Tent, followed by non-stop snapping of stars and horticulturalists from around the world. The Celebrity list gets longer each year and a couple of hundred well known characters such as Gwyneth Paltrow, HRH Prince Albert of Monaca, Paul McKenna, Piers Morgan, Nigel Slater, Terry Wogan, Julian Fellowes, Helen Mirren, Christopher Biggins and Will Young enjoyed the colour, atmosphere and music among gorgeously arrayed stands. Super friendly folk offered Champagne, strawberries and lots of cake and a real party atmosphere was evident. Oh - and I came back with some lovely cuttings and advice from the best gardeners in the world. Made some new friends, too! Our Member of Parliament, John Baron's very special Charity Walk took place at Barleylands Farm today. Only about five miles walking around this fabulous farm and great countryside and a chance to talk to loads of people raising money for their special charities. I was walking on behalf of the Billericay Cater Museum, which is certainly a great place to visit (open every day except Sunday 2-5pm) www.catermuseum.com. I’m on a Japanese theme this week and have, in the past, mentioned Lynfa Phillips, a friend who is a superb business woman from Pontyclun, South Wales. Lynfa has been awarded all kinds of prestigious awards, including Welsh Business Woman of the Year.

She is a board member of Groundwork Merthyr, Rhondda, Cynon, and Taff which is twinned with Groundwork Fukuoka Japan. Lynfa’s success in the private sector with her own Japanese firm and her special knowledge of her business and culture have given her a special insight into Japanese life.

The Executive Director, Mr Taeto-Otani requested help from their Welsh colleagues, to which Lynfa,as chair of the Groundwork Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taff Fund Raising Team mmediately responded, hoping to raise £10,000. Lynfa commented: “The date of the launch is Saturday, 21 May and Roy Noble, the well known BBC broadcaster, will perform the ceremony. The congregation of St Paul’s church in Pontyclun have been very supportive, a collection was made and I have a three figure sum to take to Groundwork next week. On behalf of, the committee of our community shop, the Chair person David Allen of our community shop brought a cheque to my home yesterday for £2,000.00 and a special “prize” is a hosted tea for two and a tour of The House of Lords. My heart is heavy with the devastation along the North East Pacific coast area of Japan following the earthquake, tsunami and damage to the nuclear plant at Fukushima. Groundwork trusts in the UK in harmony and total support for Groundwork Associations in Japan along with many other Non Governmental Agencies are helping the Japanese Government and peoples.

“With my friends in Japan whom I regard as my “Made in Japan” families, in the past, I visited the Sendai area. We visited Matsushima which along with Miyajima and Amanohashidate are considered three places of outstanding scenic beauty. Now, towns and villages washed away, no agriculture or fisheries, the major employment in that area and even more serious and long term, radio activity. My thoughts and prayers go out to the nation who are sharing each other’s grief and standing firm in their support.

Thursday 28 April and the day before the royal wedding. Royal fever pitch here in Essex with flags and bunting at the ready and street party plans all ready to go. It's a shame that after a tremendous mini heat wave amidst a traditionally April-shower month, it looks as if the bridal pair may have to fight off the rain tomorrow.

Several locals and friends are catching their train (30 minute ride) to Green Park to find a place along The Mall to camp out overnight. We wish them luck and suggested taking their red, white and blue fleeces. Few pics to illustrate this special time in England.

DAGENHAM GIRL PIPERS' 80TH ANNIVERSARY

We are all familiar these days with musical boy groups and to a certain extent, girl bands are nothing new, but more than 80 years ago they were a rarity.

When the Dagenham Girl Pipers were founded in 1930 by the Reverend Joseph W Graves, they caused a sensation when they made their debut in this once-small Thames-side town. Joseph Graves was no ordinary minister. When he and his family arrived in Dagenham, he was in his fiftieth year. Here was a man with a strong personality. Alongside his Congregational church activities, Joseph organised the Sunday School. To motivate the youngsters, he introduced the bagpipes, the swirl and sound of which he'd loved from his own youth.

The excitement with which this idea was received by the Sunday School girls, prompted him to approach Pipe-Major Douglas Taylor with the King's Own Scottish Borderers who ran a Highland dance and piping academy in Hertfordshire. At first, Pipe-Major Taylor was doubtful. "There's no reason - no physical reason at least, why girls shouldn't play the pipes. It's just that the bagpipe is a man's instrument and if I started to teach girls how to play, I should be not only criticised in my own country, but probably ostracised as well. Now, if you were thinking of forming a boys' band.." You could see his point.

Pipe-Major Taylor eventually agreed to teach piping to a dozen girls. The first practice meeting for the youngsters was Saturday 4 October 1930. This day was an important one for 11-year-old Peggy Iris, a slim dark-haired girl whose own destiny was shaped by that first introduction to the bagpipes. Her role within the DGP was to be a life-long profession.

Linda’s book tells the full story, including the band’s crucial role during the Second World War; also the heart-warming Millennium Day reunion. Linda has written a wonderful book, one that will bring pleasure to readers including the many former Dagenham Girl Pipers and their families around the world. It is also a valuable historical book about Dagenham's past.

The shows that are currently being publicised at the Brentwood Theatre are selling out week after week. At the end of March, The Hutton Players sold out all three performances of Hay Fever, and this week has seen two of the three nights of ‘Allo ‘Allo with full houses (and just a small number of returns on the opening night, effectively giving a full house too!)

Theatre Administrator Mark Reed commented, “We do not choose the shows, it is up to the groups themselves to select and produce whatever production their performing members and anticipated audience would like to see on stage. Therefore, the accolade for selling out these shows must go to The Hutton Players and The New Venture Players, and to their members for selling so well to their family and friends.”

The summer season has just been launched, which opens with The College Players’ production of Blithe Spirit, another show that is expected to sell well.

Twenty two different productions will be making up fifty five performances with musicals including The Mikado and Guys and Dolls, drama including Vinegar Tom and a new amateur national premiere of Really Old, Like Forty Five, and young people performing in a variety of shows from Terry Pratchett’s Mort to two versions of Bugsy Malone.

A brand new production for this summer has already sold all 135 seats – Everybody Dance Now is a showcase by performers from Funky Vibes Dance School including street, cheerleading and lyrical dance. Principal of the School, Hayley Davies, has performed on TV and at The London Palladium and even toured England, Ireland and Mallorca before returning to the UK.

Hayley commented, “I used to perform at Brentwood Theatre when training at Havering College, and I set up my own dance school a couple of years ago.

“This is my first showcase and I was delighted when the Theatre called me to say we had sold out, and offering a second performance. The kids and the parents are really excited – and we still have nearly three months to go.”

Many people have queried how the recent arts grants have affected Brentwood Theatre. Mark commented, “Essex County Council charge us no rent, and the Borough pay our rates, but other than that we make ends meet by earning income from hiring out the venue, using volunteers to manage the Theatre, and by constant fundraising which many individuals are generous to support.”

The Theatre’s Box Office is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday, and tickets range usually around £10 - £15, depending upon the production.

Our SWWJ visit to the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden was superb. This theatre is the world centre of music and dance. Enjoyed going backstage, watching the young ballerinas rehearse (Cinderella on at the moment) and learning the history of this magical place. There may have been rioters intent on destroying our beautiful London buildings on Saturday, but all was peaceful and very green at Olympia at the UK AWARE SHOW. Although a relatively small event, every stand had something interesting to demonstrate and inform visitors. I was keen to listen to Piper Terrett (my friend from home town Billericay pic of them at the top)part of the team on the rostrum giving their opinions on health, veganism, finance, saving energy (and the planet) and much more. There was a great fashion show, and a chance to learn how to 'swish' with Victoria and Sandra. Simply loved Rudi Schogger's new electric folding bikes launched at the show. The hottest two-wheeled TP Scoot was available for test drives - everyone had a go! They can be seen at The Gadget Show Live from 12 April in London. This nifty, folding, cleverly crafted piece of engineering can save so much money. It has a range of up to 20 miles and a top speed of 20mph. It does require insurance, tax (zero rated) and either a pre-2001 drivers licence or a CBT. Electric Scooter Shop are taking the TP Scoot on a roadshow across the UK through spring/summer.I can see this being of huge interest in the future. Can't believe four years have passed since we attended the launch party celebrating Phoenix FM's permanent broadcasting licence at the Bay Tree Centre in Brentwood. But long before this, in December 1996, Phoenix FM first took to the airwaves albeit on a temporary one month basis. Their presenters have changed over the years and their guests have included national and local celebrities, politicians and some of the world's best writers appearing at the famous annual Essex Book Festival held around the county. LAUNCH OF BRADLEY BERNARDE'S LATEST NOVEL

Several Society of Women Writers and Journalists members are celebrating the launch of their new books this month.

Our very own Honorary Secretary, Bradley Bernarde, has been busily signing copies of her exciting new novel entitled To Thine Own Self at bookshops in London bookshops, but more particularly in Stamford, a place she knows so well having family connections there for more than 30 years. The idea for the plot of her new book began here and she chose the 17th century Commonwealth period as a fascinating background with its links to witchcraft.

Among her reviews is one from Clive Evans, Producer of Nice Pictures, who wrote: ‘An excellently researched fascinating account of life in the 17th century... The characters are all finely drawn and our sympathy is fully engaged with the problems and difficulties they encounter. This is a book with which to savour the atmosphere of an age, and is thoroughly recommended for history buffs.’

The Apothecary’s Gift was published by Whydown Books in 2003 and the author has written three more books, along with many short stories.

Wendy Hughes is one of the most energetic writers I know, yet she turned to writing in 1989 when ill-health and poor vision forced her into early medical retirement. Since then she has published 26 nonfiction books, and over 1700 articles published Her work has appeared in magazines as diverse as The Lady, Funeral Service Journal, On the Road, 3rd Stone, Celtic Connections, Best of British, and Guiding magazine. Her books include many on her native Wales, Anglesey Past and Present, The Story of Brecknock, Brecon, a pictorial History of the Town, Carmarthen, a History and Celebration and Tales of Old Glamorgan. She has also co-authored two story/activity books for children, and a book on Walton on Thames in the Images of England series, a company history and two books on the charity Hope Romania. Her latest books are, Haunted Worthing published in October 2010, and a new colour edition of The Story of Pembrokeshire published in March 2011. She has two books coming out in June 2011, Shipwrecks of Sussex and The Story of Gower (colour edition), and is currently working on The Story of Carmarthenshire for the same series

Wendy has spent many years campaigning and writing on behalf of people affected by Stickler Syndrome, a progressive genetic connective tissue disorder from which she herself suffers. She founded the Stickler Syndrome Support Group and raises awareness of the condition amongst the medical profession, and produces the group’s literature, and has written the only book on the condition, Stickler The Elusive Syndrome, and has also contributed to a DVD on the condition.

She has also written three novels, Sanctimonious Sin, a three generation saga set in Wales at the turn of the century, Powers That Heal set in the Neolithic period and a semi biographical book entitled New Beginnings which deals with two generations coping with blindness and a genetic condition. BRENTWOOD'S SUPERB THEATRE - ADMINISTERED BY MARK REED

For a town to have its own theatre is of huge benefit and Brentwood, Essex, England is so fortunate in having such a gem. But it was not an easy achievement and many local ardent fund-raisers can be proud of the work put in place many years ago. Mark is the great enthusiastic Administrator of the Brentwood Theatre which is growing in popularity throughout the south east. ELEVENTH ESSEX BOOK FESTIVAL

Yesterday was the long awaited Launch of the Essex Book Festival at which we met Joanna Trollope (interviewed at top by Dave Monk) and Lindsey Davis (the author just introducing her 20th adventure of the popular Roman sleuth, Falco), among many other writers. This particular Festival is guaranteed to bring creative people together, readers as well as writers. The Billericay Readers' group members were out in force (with chairman of Brentwood Writers' Circle, Colin Taylor doing a great networking job) and members of the Society of Women Writers and Journalists. Our lovely Val Dunmore, herself an author, came over from Surrey to represent the Society, as did Margaret Hoffman who again made a long journey to get to Chelmsford Library. These gatherings are great and I enjoy being a Patron of Essex Book Festival for the third year running. Now that we are launched, the events of individual authors, journalists and comedians will be taking place throughout March around the county. Carol Jolly and her team organised another excellent show from The Five Lakes Hotel at Tolleshunt Knights near Maldon on Thursday. The Exhibition Hall is enormous and on Thursday was filled with a hundred great stands. As one of the Essex Writers, we were visited non stop all day and met some great people, some of them wanting to write their memoirs. ‘The Art of John Lennon’ at The Mandeville Hotel

Presenting limited edition prints of John Lennon’s original hand-drawn sketches on February 26th and 27th at Marylebone’s stylish Mandeville Hotel. Join art lovers who are celebrating John Lennon for what would have been his 70th birthday at this exhibition showing a selection of 30 original prints signed by Yoko Ono including ‘War is Over’, ‘Imagine Peace’, ‘Jock and Ono’, ‘Come Together’, ‘Double Fantasy’ and ‘Consult the Stars’. With the originals valued at £1.5million and above, these limited edition prints are collector’s items and available from £800. Yoko Ono initiated the print programme in 1985 demonstrating Lennon’s passion for art, and retains many of the original works herself. There will be four new prints on show, never seen before in the UK and Europe and several prints which are currently only available in the US.

For decades, the name John Lennon has been instantly associated with The Beatles and music, but very few know him as an artist and hence, few people have seen his artwork until recently. His drawings are whimsical yet poetic and a commentary on his everyday life, his wife Yoko and their son.

The Mandeville Hotel, renowned for its fabulous afternoon teas has created a John Lennon inspired men’s afternoon tea, served with John Lennon’s favourite drink The Panama, a brandy Alexander style drink. THE ESSEX TOURISM & LEISURE SHOW

Each year the Essex Tourism & Leisure Show attracts more exhibitors and visitors," said Organiser Carol JollY. For many years, this prestigious Show was held at the Brentwood Centre but has settled comfortably at its super new venue at the Five Lakes Resort, Tolleshunt Knights near Maldon. This year, the Show will be held on Thursday 24 February from 10.00am – 3.30pm. Tickets are free and there is much to see with more than 90 exhibitors covering numerous types of sport and leisure activity. It is not all home grown. As well as Essex, there will be representatives from Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Sussex, Kent and of course, London. So we will learn about wonderful castles and historic houses, theme parks and museums, in fact, a huge showcase of attractions to keep visitors interested all day.

Courtesy coaches will be running on the hour and half-hour from Witham Railway Station, and there will be refreshments available during the day.
Visitors can expect free competitions, displays, presentations and give-aways going on throughout the day, along with an abundance of free literature and ideas for super days out and short holiday breaks. The travel industry will be well represented, as will be our county’s hotels, historical homes and venues suitable for weddings, exhibitions and prestigious events.

There is also a chance to meet members of the Brentwood Writers’ Circle who will be on hand to talk about their own recently published books and maybe give advice to aspiring writers and poets who may want to see their own work in print. Last year’s visitors included many from the US and Australia. Frances Clamp, President of the Brentwood Writers’ Circle is looking forward to attending the show on the ‘Writers’ Stand’ along with fellow members. Frances is currently a regular contributor on Brentwood’s history show presented every Tuesday at 2pm by Scott Ross for Phoenix FM. Frances will be signing copies of her newly published book Brentwood - My Heritage and members of other writing and photographic clubs will all be on hand to give advice on the day.

JIM REEVE'S NEW BOOK

My writing colleague, Jim Reeve is enjoying great success with his third book A Schoolboy’s War in Cornwall and is still receiving excellent responses from readers.

Jim’s memories of the childhood are told movingly in this, his third book under the History Press impress. He draws on his own personal childhood experiences as an evacuee during World War Two.

Brought up in London’s East End, Jim, his little brother and mother were billeted in the Great Western Hotel, Newquay. He considers it an adventure and outlines his experiences in the book which runs to 50,000 words.

“This book depicts my experiences and those of others of our evacuation to Cornwall, a place chosen by the authorities as a place of safety,” says Jim. “One and a half million children were moved out to areas designated as safe. The government commandeered four thousand trains and three thousand buses to take the youngster to their destinations. The children’s parents never knew where their children were going to be billeted and the whole process was often disturbing.”

Jim’s book is both poignant and amusing at times and he shares vivid recollections of war-torn London contrasting with the beauty of St Ives, Newquay and Redruth which he knows so well. History aficionados, former evacuees and readers interested in this aspect of World War II will appreciate Jim’s memories which are told in his engaging narrative. I enjoyed this book very much. Jim is pictured with Valerie Dunmore, Vice President,when he recently won an award for his work as the first SWWJ Male Associate to receive such an award. And - he made front cover!

BRENTWOOD WRITERS' CIRCLE

As most people know, Brentwood Writers' Circle members will be celebrating their 70th birthday on l May. This well known group has enjoyed tremendous writing success within its membership of around 60 men and women of all ages. We are preparing an anthology which will be ready at the time of our special anniversary with some pretty fabulous photographs. This 1946 image shows our founder Elizabeth Baxter (right hand front row) with the famous author of the time, Ruby Ayres, who was guest speaker (end of the row) and other members. Will dig out some other post-war photos when I get time. Keep an eye on this blog!
